The Power of Addressing Toxic Behaviour: What Managers Must Know

Signs You’re Excusing Toxic Behaviour Without Realising It

What happens when we stop tolerating the toxicity someone brings into our team?

When we stop excusing bad behaviour away as ‘just a bad day’, or ‘a bad situation’…

Well, let me share this recent story from a client who did stop just a few weeks ago.

Somebody in their team was really toxic.

🚫They were bringing people to the dark side.

🚫They were infecting the team with their negativity.

🚫They wouldn’t raise anything with the manager, but they rolled their eyes when work was discussed, they sneered and commented, trying to discredit the manager.

The Leadership Growth That Comes from Confronting Toxicity

The manager—my client—let it go for a while. Until they couldn’t anymore. They braced for the conversation, prepared for it with a plan, and they stepped into the ‘arena’, so to speak.

The minute they stopped tolerating the toxicity…this happened:

  • The manager felt better
  • Felt more confident
  • Felt they could handle the situation

Sure, it wouldn’t be the only conversation. It wouldn’t be an easy situation to handle. But they’d already done the hardest part.

This is one of the things we don’t talk about enough when it comes to difficult people or tough conversations. It’s a baptism of fire of sorts that leaves you a better, stronger, more capable and resilient leader.

Of course it impacts your team and your work, but the very first thing it impacts is YOU.
