Spotting Your Leadership Blind Spots to Build Stronger Teams

How to build stronger teams

I shared a story about finishing my holiday jigsaw puzzle—and realising (again) that I’m not a natural finisher.

I thrive in the 80/20 zone: big ideas, getting things started, building momentum. But when it comes to figuring out all the details that take anything to the finish line? I lose interest. Not to mention patience.

Knowing that about myself makes a huge difference. Not just in puzzles, but in my work too.

What are Leadership Blind Spots?

When we manage other people, our blind spots can affect everyone else around us.

👉 If you’re great at vision but struggle with execution, your team might lack follow-through

👉 If you’re highly detail-oriented but not big on delegation, your team might feel stifled

👉 If you avoid conflict, your team might not know where they stand.

We all have blind spots.

But the problem isn’t having them—it’s not seeing them and letting them hold us (and our teams) back.

How do you spot your blind spots?

Start here:

  • Look at your patterns – Where do projects tend to slow down or go off track? What part do you play in that?
  • Notice what frustrates you – Often, the things that annoy us about others point to something we do ourselves, but we don’t recognise it.
  • Ask your team – What’s something I could improve as a leader? What do you need more of (or less of) from me?

If you’re starting to get a picture, and are thinking you might have a few, just know that the best managers aren’t the ones with no blind spots. They’re the ones who are aware of them—and adjust accordingly.

So, what about you? What’s one leadership blind spot you already know you have?
